  • Shopify vs WooCommerce Search: How to Get Semantic Search on WordPress

TL;DR — Shopify markets semantic search as a baseline for modern e-commerce, but it is gated behind higher-tier plans and rolling out unevenly. WooCommerce doesn’t ship semantic search, but adding it to a WordPress store takes a plugin — no platform migration required. This post walks through what each side actually offers today, and how to get parity on WooCommerce.

What is semantic search, and why does it matter for stores?

Semantic search converts each product description into a numeric vector that captures its meaning, and does the same with the shopper’s query. It then returns the products whose vectors sit closest to the query’s vector. A search for “summer blue dress” surfaces a “light navy cotton sundress” even when the product’s title contains none of those exact words. Keyword search cannot do this, which is why traditional WooCommerce and WordPress search leaves conversions on the table for descriptive queries.

Does Shopify have semantic search by default?

Only on higher-tier plans. Shopify offers semantic search through the Search & Discovery app and its newer “Shopify Magic” features, and the marketing treats it as the new baseline. In practice availability is gated: the entry-level Basic plan still ranks by keyword overlap with fuzzy matching and typo correction, and the AI features roll out unevenly by region and store category. Full semantic search plus custom ranking rules land on Advanced and Shopify Plus. If you’re a small merchant on Basic, the marketed capability isn’t necessarily the capability your store actually has.

Does WooCommerce have semantic search built in?

No. WooCommerce inherits WordPress core search, which is keyword-only — it matches on literal word overlap in title and content. There is no native semantic layer, no live dropdown, and no exact-SKU pinning. To get semantic search on WooCommerce you need a plugin, and the trade-off compared to Shopify is not the capability but where the capability lives.

    The migration trap

Migrating a WooCommerce store to Shopify just to get semantic search is expensive in ways that don’t show up in the sticker price:

    • Every product URL, category URL and blog post URL changes. Search rankings you built for years reset overnight.
    • Every integration — email, accounting, fulfilment, custom checkout logic — has to be rebuilt against Shopify’s model.
    • Your theme becomes a Shopify theme: different templating, different developer pool, different set of trade-offs.
    • Your data lives on Shopify’s servers under their terms. Portability out is limited.

Semantic search is worth having. It isn’t worth those.

How to add semantic search to WordPress and WooCommerce

AI Search — the plugin this blog belongs to — brings the same underlying capability to any WordPress site:

    • Semantic embeddings: OpenAI’s text-embedding-3-small by default, -3-large for higher precision on paid plans. Your content is converted to vectors and matched by meaning, not word overlap. We wrote about the difference between the two models here.
    • Live dropdown block: a Gutenberg search block that shows product thumbnails, titles and prices while the shopper types — the WordPress equivalent of Shopify’s live search, wired into your theme’s colours.
    • SKU and title exact-match tier: a shopper who types a full SKU or an exact product title gets that item pinned to the top of results, regardless of the AI ranking. Amazon-style codes still behave predictably.
    • Any content, not just products: WooCommerce products, blog posts, documentation pages, custom post types, custom fields, taxonomies. If it’s in WordPress, it’s searchable semantically.
    • No lock-in: it’s a plugin. Vectors live in your own database. Uninstall it and the plugin is gone; nothing sneaky happens with your data.

Installation is one click from the WordPress.org repository. The setup wizard walks through five steps — five minutes on a small store, longer only because the wizard syncs your existing content with AI in the background. When it finishes, semantic search is live.

    And Framer?

An AI Search port to Framer is close to shipping. Same embeddings service behind it, same live-dropdown pattern. If you’re a Framer-first shop wondering whether accepting keyword search is your only option, you won’t have to for much longer.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have semantic search by default?

Only on higher-tier plans. Shopify offers semantic search through the Search & Discovery app and Shopify Magic features, but availability is gated: the entry-level Basic plan still ranks by keyword overlap. Full semantic search is included on Advanced and Shopify Plus.

Does WooCommerce have semantic search built in?

No. WooCommerce inherits WordPress core search, which is keyword-only. To get semantic search on WooCommerce you need a plugin. AI Search adds it without changing your platform, hosting or theme.

Can WordPress do semantic search like Shopify?

Yes. The AI Search plugin uses the same underlying technique Shopify uses — embedding vectors from OpenAI’s text-embedding-3 family — to match shoppers’ queries by meaning rather than keyword overlap. It works on any WordPress site, including WooCommerce stores.

Do I have to migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify to get better search?

No. Migrating a WooCommerce store to Shopify for the search feature is expensive: product and category URLs change (SEO reset), integrations rebuild against Shopify’s model, and your theme has to be rewritten. Adding a semantic-search plugin achieves the same capability without touching URLs, integrations or theme.

Is AI Search a good Shopify alternative for WordPress?

For the specific problem of upgrading search from keyword to semantic on a WooCommerce store, yes: same underlying embeddings technology, works on the entry-level tier that Shopify’s equivalent doesn’t cover, no lock-in. It doesn’t replace what Shopify offers around checkout, hosting or apps — but for search alone it removes the reason to migrate.

If you were weighing a Shopify migration for the search alone, you have an off-ramp.

  • The Best AI Search Plugins for WooCommerce (2026)

Looking for AI-powered search for a WooCommerce store in 2026? Here are the options that actually ship semantic search today – including our own plugin and its competitors, compared on the criteria that matter. Full disclosure: we make AI Search, and this list includes tools we compete with. We keep it factual; every claim can be checked on the linked sites.

    How we compare them

Four questions separate these tools better than any feature list: Does it replace your search UI or enhance the existing one? Do you need to bring your own AI provider key? Is there a usable free tier? And where does your data go?

    1. AI Search (that’s us)

AI Search adds semantic matching to the search your store already has. Traditional keyword results always rank first – exact SKU and title matches are pinned to the top – and AI results are appended after them, so installing it cannot make any search worse. No theme changes, no new UI, free up to 10,000 embeddings with no API key, EU-based embedding service. Best for stores that want better recall without touching their storefront.

    2. Queryra AI Search

A newer AI search plugin with a live demo store and its own SaaS embedding API. Indexes content from page builders (Elementor, ACF, Meta Box) as well as products. Worth a look if builder-content indexing is your priority.

    3. Motive Commerce Search

A full search and discovery suite (from the team behind Empathy’s commerce search) with a polished, feature-rich search experience including conversational elements. It replaces your search UI with its own – which is the point: you get a complete, opinionated experience. Suits stores that want a full search overhaul rather than an enhancement.

    4. WP Fastest Site Search (ExpertRec)

Crawler-based hosted search: ExpertRec’s crawler indexes your site and serves results from its cloud with its own search UI. Setup is easy because it works from the outside in; the trade-off is less control over what gets indexed and how results are ranked.

    5. VectorSeek

Vector-based semantic search for WordPress where you connect your own AI provider. More of a building block than a turnkey store search – interesting for developers who want control over the embedding pipeline.

    6. WP Engine Smart Search

If you host on WP Engine, their AI Toolkit includes Smart Search with semantic capabilities, integrated at the platform level. Excellent if you are already on WP Engine; not an option if you are not.

    7. Algolia (via WPSolr or official libraries)

The enterprise route: Algolia is a world-class hosted search engine with instant results and heavy customization, typically integrated through WPSolr or custom development. Powerful, but you are buying and operating a search platform – budget and developer time to match.

What about FiboSearch, SearchWP and Relevanssi?

They are the keyword-search stalwarts – mature, popular, and genuinely good at what they do (FiboSearch’s instant dropdown, SearchWP’s and Relevanssi’s relevance tuning). They are not AI/semantic search, so they solve a different problem: polishing keyword matching rather than understanding meaning. We wrote a full AI Search vs FiboSearch comparison.

    Bottom line

Want a full search UI overhaul? Look at Motive or Algolia. Already on WP Engine? Try Smart Search. Want semantic results without changing anything your shoppers see – and a free tier to prove it works? That is what we built AI Search for.
