Short answer: SearchWP rebuilds the WordPress search engine so it indexes what WordPress default search ignores — custom fields, PDFs, media, ACF. AI Search sits on top of any search engine (default or SearchWP) and adds semantic matching so users find things by meaning, not just words. They’re not either/or.
What each plugin actually does
SearchWP replaces the WordPress search engine with its own indexed one. Where the built-in search only looks at post title, content and excerpt, SearchWP indexes custom fields, taxonomies, ACF fields, WooCommerce product data, PDF and Office document contents, and media library metadata. It also lets you weight sources: title matches count more than tag matches, or vice versa. It’s the go-to when your content lives in places WordPress default search cannot see.
AI Search works on meaning. Every product, post, page or taxonomy term gets a semantic “fingerprint” (an embedding), and a user’s query gets its own fingerprint. Matching is by proximity in meaning — so “something warm for winter” finds an insulated parka whose description never uses those words. Keyword and exact SKU matches always rank first; the AI results are appended after them. AI Search also ships two optional Gutenberg blocks for a live search-as-you-type dropdown.
Side by side
| SearchWP | AI Search | |
|---|---|---|
| Core approach | Rebuilds the keyword search engine | Adds semantic matching on top of the existing search |
| Where results come from | Its own indexed search engine | WordPress or WooCommerce search, extended with AI results |
| Understands meaning and synonyms | Keyword-based (better than default, still keyword) | Yes — vector embeddings, cross-lingual (100+ languages) |
| Indexes custom fields, ACF, PDFs, media | Yes — its signature feature | Custom fields yes; PDFs and media not (yet) |
| SKU / attribute search | Yes (WooCommerce extension) | Yes — exact and partial SKU matches always rank first, no extension needed |
| Search-as-you-type dropdown | No native block; requires an extension | Yes (1.33+) — keyword instantly, AI on pause |
| Weighting / relevance tuning | Yes — per-source, granular | Similarity threshold, term-boost slider; simpler surface |
| Multilingual quality | Depends on WPML / Polylang integration | Cross-lingual matching built in; Standard and Pro use a materially better multilingual model |
| Free tier | Limited free plugin; core is paid | Free up to 2,000 embeddings, no API key |
| Starting price | $99/year (Standard) | €49/year (Standard) or €129/year (Pro) |
| Setup | Reindex your content, configure sources and weights | 2-minute wizard; existing search behaviour keeps working |
When to choose SearchWP
Choose SearchWP when the content your users need isn’t reachable by WordPress default search: values inside custom fields, ACF fields, WooCommerce attributes stored in meta, text inside uploaded PDF or Word documents, image metadata. SearchWP’s indexer covers all of that and lets you weight what matters. If your problem is “search misses a whole category of content”, SearchWP is the tool.
When to choose AI Search
Choose AI Search when the content is indexed already but users still miss it because they don’t use your exact words. Descriptive queries (“something warm but breathable for hiking”), cross-language queries, long-tail natural-language questions, model-name searches on catalogues where product titles don’t contain the query words. The Free tier covers this at zero cost and no API key; the paid plans upgrade to the more precise text-embedding-3-large model, which is materially better on multilingual queries.
Try any of these examples in the live demos to see the difference:
- “my wrist hurts after long days at the computer” (Electronics demo)
- “smart look for a job interview” (Clothing demo)
- “book about grief” (Bookstore demo)
Can you run both?
Yes, and it’s a legitimate setup for content-rich sites. SearchWP handles the “index everything, including custom fields and PDFs” job at the keyword layer. AI Search runs on top and adds the semantic layer for descriptive or multilingual queries. Because AI Search does not rewrite your search form or replace the results template, it composes with SearchWP without any conflict — the keyword results still come first, AI results are appended.
Bottom line
SearchWP is a better search engine. AI Search adds a layer that no keyword engine can match: matching by meaning. If your users describe things in their own words, search in multiple languages, or type long questions, AI Search closes gaps that even the best-configured SearchWP index can’t. Start with AI Search free (2 minutes, no card, no API key) — you’ll know within a day whether the semantic layer changes anything on your traffic.
