I stopped going to the gym in 2020 for the reason everyone did. I did not go back. I bought a pair of Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbells, which go from 5 to 52 pounds each by turning a dial, and I put them in the corner of the living room next to a yoga mat. That is the entire home gym.
What worked about this specific setup, which no online guru told me: the friction of getting to the gym had been higher than I thought. Sixteen minutes of subway plus locker plus small talk before you actually pick anything up. When the equipment is 12 feet from where you drink coffee, the workout starts before you have overthought it. I lift more days per week than I ever did with a gym membership, and I do fewer minutes per session, and I am in better shape than I was at 30.
The catch: two dumbbells cover about 80% of a good strength routine, but not all of it. I miss squats and deadlifts. I compensate with heavier goblet squats and Romanian deadlifts using the dumbbells, and I accept that I will not build the same kind of raw strength as a barbell would give me. What I get in exchange is consistency. Consistency wins on a five-year timeframe. It really does.
